da Vinci Robotic Surgical System is intensively used in urologic surgery. Radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer is the surgical procedure in which the system is employed most frequently (please click to view the video of da Vinci radical prostatectomy). The system is also used in laparoscopic pyeloplasty (treatment of stenotic UPJ) and radical cystoprostatectomy (removal of bladder and prostate together).

Robotic surgery in prostate cancer has many advantages. The 3D view and x12 magnification on the console, allows better preservation of neurovascular bundle responsible for erection which results in earlier achievement of urinary control and maintenance of the erection. This method causes reduced blood loss and even no blood transfusion is required. Small scar tissues remain postoperatively and good cosmetic results are obtained. Again, this method shortens the hospital stay length which allows patients to return to their daily lives more rapidly.

Because of the intuitive interface of the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, many surgeons prefer robotic surgery even for complicated cases requiring minimally invasive approach.

Robotic-assisted visualization allows obtaining better clinical results and smaller incisions in many procedures of urology varying from nephrectomy to radical prostatectomy due to its following attributes: enhanced dexterity, precision and easy-to control. Currently, da Vinci Robotic Surgical System shapes the future of urooncologic surgery by da Vinci Prostatectomy (dVP) operation. dVP operation performed by da Vinci is the treatment method which is rapidly becoming a widespread technique against prostate cancer.

Several urologic operations carried out by da Vinci:

• da Vinci Prostatectomy
• da Vinci Pyeloplasty
• da Vinci Cystectomy
• da Vinci Nephrectomy
• da Vinci Partial Nephrectomy
• da Vinci Ureteral Reimplantation

da Vinci Prostatectomy (dVP)

dVP is currently the fastest growing prostate cancer treatment method. State-of-the-art features of da Vinci Robotic Surgical System such as high-resolution 3D visualization, Endowrist instruments modeled after the human hand, intuitive motion and 4th arm, make da Vinci indispensable for radical prostatectomy operation. Many current clinical studies have provided better clinical results than the outcome of the traditional open surgery or conventional laparoscopic approach.

Compared with the traditional prostatectomy, dVP operation means less pain and faster recovery for patients. Reduced need for blood transfusion, smaller scarring, and lower infection risk can be mentioned among other advantages of dVP. Moreover, clinical studies show that dVP method provides better cancer control alongside reducing urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction.

Advantages of da Vinci in Urology

• Comprehensive visualization and preservation of nerve-vessel bundle during prostate cancer operations
• Detailed dissection of prostate and the surrounding tissues
• Better urethrovesical anastomosis (reconnection of bladder and urethra) and less urinary leakage
• Enhanced control over blood loss due to magnified 3D visualization
• Reduced postoperative pain
• Considerably smaller incision compared to the open operation.
• Shorter catheterization duration and hospital stay in prostate operations
